Have you heard the horror stories about the people who have poured antifreeze into their engine, or brake fluid into the radiator? While this might seem like a far-fetched fantasy, it really does happen! And of course, there are a ton of things that can go wrong when working on a car. But precision is often necessary when you’re talking about major components, and fluids are a part of that. Below are a few colors of fluids you can look out for and readily identify in the bottle and in your car.

Golden/Brown

One of the biggest, motor oil. Motor oil is one of the more important components to check on and should always be handled with the utmost care. Typically, your oil will be filled on top or of very close to the top end of the engine, and will be labeled with a sign that looks like a small oil container. It’s important that you double check that nothing except motor oil is inserted in this area as it can cause serious damage to the engine.

Pink

Pink fluid is typically associated with the steering column of your car, or the transmission. These can be filled in a number of ways, but the most important thing to do is check for leaks — new or old. If something such as this is leaking from your car, the risk of tranny failure or a burnout of your power steering is very likely and can be very costly.

Green

Green fluid is often associated with antifreeze, which is also a major factor of your car. If you’re leaking antifreeze, it’s important to make sure you check your radiator, the support, hoses and more.

Yellow

Yellow is often associated with your engine’s coolant system, which can be a huge problem and hurt the car’s longevity. Should you experience this, make sure you’re checking for the source of the leak and having it fixed as soon as possible to ensure that nothing is in danger of blowing or causing even more damage.
