As we (hopefully) brace for Spring, everyone is going to be very eager to bring back that shine on their babies and get them back on the road. But, there’s a common misconception between many car owners who believe any brush or mitt paired with soapy water can get the job done. And while they’re partially correct, they’re also wrong in thinking that this won’t cause potential long-term damage to the clear coat and paint of their cars. Here are a few things to remember before your first wash of the season.
To Prevent Swirls
It’s important to know that swirls and circular marks on your clear coat are created by motions that are not industry standard. Instead of slapping your brush or washing mitt onto the cars panel, gently work back and forth or up and down when spreading any sort of soap or water on the car. It’s also important to note that the car should be thoroughly hosed down before you apply any sort of pressure to remove other particles of dirt or debris.
Use Two Buckets
People typically clean with one bucket, dipt the brush right back in, and go back at it. This in and of itself is a huge no-no, as dirt particles are being shed from your cleaning apparatus and put into the water meant to clean your car. Keep a clean water bucket and a dirty water bucket nearby to separate dirty from clean.
Softer Towels
A nice buff afterwards is also nice, but the wrong towel can ruin a car’s look. Make sure that you’re taking extra measures to soften up your towels before adding a layer of wax or shine to the paint. Dampen them with the solution and make sure there’s nothing stuck to them that could cause damage.
Before you get the car ready for spring, make sure you’re working on getting it mechanically sound for the season as well. Even though it won’t be warm for a few weeks (we hope!), it’s never too early to get your pride and joy back into the shop for its necessary repairs.
