There’s always a good time to prep your car for the colder season ahead, and sometimes that proactive work can lead to immense benefits when the season finally makes its way over. One of the things many people do not know is switching to winter tires and the right time to do so. For areas similar to ours here in Fairfield County, the climate certainly can drop quickly, which, when paired with precipitation, can be a recipe for disaster. So when should you switch to winter tires? We outline some of the better times to do so below.

Check The Weather

This is one of the easier ways to determine when something like this should ultimately happen. As the temperature drops, any precipitation can eventually run the risk of being considered dangerous enough where you’d lose traction. Keep up to date on the weather and when you see colder temperatures mixed with rain and other forms of hazards, grab your tires and make an appointment to swap them out.

When Summer Is Over

After summer ends, you might actually be in need of a tire swap regardless. Many summer tires aren’t beneficial in climates where the temperature doesn’t match, which can cause an issue in terms of both treadwear and traction. If the temperature has dropped to where summer tires are not useful, it’s time to switch.

When Your Tires Are Worn

During this time, it’s a good idea to check the tread of whatever tires you are currently running on your car. If they’re due to be replaced, consider making the switch to a winter set, and switching to another set after the season. Especially for those without AWD/4WD, this is important to have and makes sense for when the weather is less than favorable.
