The oil in your car acts similarly to the blood in your veins — and without it, your car, just like you, wouldn’t be alive and well! It’s important to understand the vital role that oil plays, but the meticulous care that should be done to keep it going. We’ve given you a brief rundown as to what type of oils are best, but never how much or how little! Below is a bit more information on that and how it can be of help to you down the road.
Too Little Oil
Having too little oil poses big problems for your vehicle. The oil acts as lubrication and essentially keeps your vehicle from breaking down from the inside out. The reason your engine has a dipstick is to measure the level of oil — and too little can cause issues. It’s important to make sure that your oil levels are always within the recommended dots on your dipstick. If not, add some oil or bring it in to diagnose the reason for oil loss.
Too Much Oil
While this isn’t as serious of an issue as too little, there are issues that can arise from having too much oil in your vehicle. This includes leaking, flooding, and spillage on main components of the engine and the vehicle itself. The last thing you need is oil on the driveway, ruining your paving stones. If you think your car has too much oil, drain a small amount out, or bring it to the shop. Alternatively, you can also check the levels on the dipstick after the car has sat for a short period of time.
