As temperatures drop for the winter, the truth about your oil is that it likely won’t be doing any good for your engine. With many, there’s the idea that running your car longer before driving it is the safe option — and while it can help a little bit, it’s not the best option. Traditionally, an oil change is the best option, but the right oil also makes a huge difference in the longevity of your engine through the winter and for years to come.
What Oil Do I Need?
While every car is different, there are a few things you can go by when you’re thinking about an oil change. For example, if your vehicle uses 5w-30 during the year, consider this your baseline. This is the recommended oil for your car that manufacturers deem as the best for normal operating conditions. However in the winter, something less thick is a better option.
It’s always a good idea to check your owners manual and with other vehicle experts, but moving down a weight can be a good choice for your car, especially in cold climates.
Traditionally, the 5W would be the rate in which the oil flows during the winter, while the other number (30) would relate to the viscosity at 100 degrees celsius.
Can I Do This Myself?
Yes! Of course an oil change is very doable on your driveway or in the street. As long as you are using great caution with a jack, jack stands, protective clothing and materials for the street, you shouldn’t have much of an issue. Of course, if this is your first time around, we don’t recommend doing this alone.
Instead of the risk of mistake, make sure you’re bringing your vehicle to a trusted mechanical expert who can perform the necessary winter maintenance and get you back on the road in no time — safely!
